It may surprise you that one of the most common questions I get asked is:
‘How do I find her ring size without her knowing?’
I make bespoke engagement rings. Most people who come to me have great ideas for what their partner loves, their style and colour choices. This owl-inspired alternative engagement ring, for example, which I made recently. But, they’re often clueless when it comes to knowing their partner’s size.
Aside from measuring their finger while they’re asleep (which is a problem if they’re a light sleeper!), there are a few nifty tricks I’ve picked up to find out someone’s ring size without them knowing.
So, by popular demand, here’s my guide to help you:
Find her ring size without her knowing:
#1 Steal her favourite ring
Subtly steal (I use that term loosely, you’ll return it later 😉 ) her favourite ring when she’s not wearing it. Take it to your local jewellers or the person you’ve commissioned to make the engagement ring and ask them to measure it – this will get you the most accurate size. This tactic works best if you can steal one that she wears on the right finger! Remember to return it at a later date.
#2 Take an artists impression
If you’re lucky, she will take off her ring when she’s in the shower, washing up, or something similar. Now is a great moment to draw around it on a bit of paper. Draw around the inner diameter a Jeweller will be able to match this to a size. No artistic talent needed!
#3 The ‘its for a friend of a friend’ trick
Trick your partner into thinking you’re buying a ring for a family member or close friend. It’s a great excuse to ask for her size without any covert stealing needed. If she’s not sure you can buy a ring-sizer from me or visit your nearest Jewellers to get sized.
#4 Share the secret
Get your partners friends in on the mission and ask them to surreptitiously find out her size. They could ask her to try on their rings to compare hand sizes – make sure it’s someone with a similar hand size! Maybe her friends could drag her into a jewellery store to get her finger measured – just for fun! Make sure they’re good at keeping a secret.
#5 Get playful – make finger puppets
This is my favourite tactic because you have lots of fun at the same time. It works best if you have children you can visit. Pretend you’re playing a game and get her to wrap a piece of paper around her finger to size up the finger puppet. Keep the paper to one side to give to your local Jewellers to measure. And the best bit? Stay in character and finish making your finger puppet, because, why not?
Useful Engagement Ring Facts
And, because I’m nice, and I know what a challenge it can be to find out her ring size, here are a few facts that might help you:
– Did you know that the dominant hand is usually bigger so make sure you measure the right hand?
– When in doubt go a size bigger, it’s easy to re-size a ring that’s too big.
– The most common UK women’s ring size ranges from K to N.
